"Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, who is dying from pancreatic cancer, gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving talk, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals."

This is an amazing, moving, motivating (insert adjective here) speech. I always find it ironic that those who have to stare death in the face learn to appreciate life more than those of us who seemingly take it for granted. If we can all live each day like it's our last, imagine how much can be accomplished on so many different levels. Randy Pausch is a true inspiration... I will use this speech as a reference for the rest of my life.

Taking outdoor advertising to the air

A start-up company based in London called Ad-Air has come up with a new way to turn innocent and unassuming airline passengers into potential consumers. The "first global aerial advertising network" will consist of giant, billboard-like ads that are visible from a passenger's window as they approach the runway.

They have already secured approval to set up sites at over a dozen airports, including Heathrow, LAX, Charles de Gaulle (Paris), Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) and Haneda in Tokyo. Ad-Air is looking to create a network of roughly 30 airports. Advertisers pay over $100k/month for a site, with some of the busier airports eventually fetching up to over $160k/month.

I personally don't find this creative at all. Finding different places to cram this shit down people's throats is not innovative, nor is it effective. Maybe the duty-free stores will be the first ones to try this out...

The best idea for any form of outdoor advertising I have heard was about 10 years ago when my dad told me about 2 guys from Harvard developing technology to place advertising in the subway tunnels. A series of illuminated still frames placed on the walls inside the tunnel would create the effect of an actual commercial during your subway ride i.e. an athlete drinking a bottle of Gatorade.

What an amazing show, and what an amazing venue Hammerstein is. This is only the second time I saw the Beastie Boys live (which is totally unacceptable in my book), but it was so memorable that it will resonate in my mind forever. I have to say that I didn't miss Mix Master Mike (real name Michael Schwartz) as much as I thought I would... the former Skratch Pikl is an all-time favorite of mine and is known for his live performances, but the band was on point and on fiyah all night long.

Money Mark on the keys also makes a HUGE difference.

I have been wanting to do this for a long time, but needed some motivation. That motivation came in the form of long-time buddy, Jay Levy... he ran the NYCity Half Marathon this past Sunday. He has been asking me to train with him for a while now, and I have been lazy about it. Not anymore. It's go time.

Training officially started yesterday with a 3+ mile run through Greenpoint (there are a lot of hot Polish women in Greenpoint, damn). This is going to be my new weekday running route. I am going to try for 3-4 runs during the week, probably at night since it's so damn hot in the mornings. Saturdays is a 5-7 mile run in Central Park and tennis on Sundays with Spliff.

All you need for proof of this bold statement is to listen to his lyrical prowess on his newest mixtape, Da Drought 3. Each song on this album is just 1 long simile and metaphor. He says stuff that is strays on the line of retarded and genius, but normally tends to lean more towards the latter. One of the many highlights from Drought is the "We Takin' Over (Remix)" (just reading these lyrics doesn't nearly do it the justice it deserves, so you can listen to it here).

Lately I have been relying on different forms of media for my news. For a while, it was strictly NYTimes.com in the mornings, then Daily Show and Colbert Report at night for commentary on what went down that day.

I have been a fan of VICE for a while... probably since my trip to LA with Evan, Jose and G-Money 6 years ago. The VICE Guide to Travel is a must have in your DVD collection. I am now a huge fan of their VBS.tv ***WARNING*** Do not visit this site w/o being ready to spend a few hours buried in entertaining content i.e. tons of music videos, documentaries (the Sudan doc is intense), etc.

At the Take Back America 2007 conference in DC last month, I was exposed to Max Blumenthal's work for the first time (check his blog here). He goes to different events around the country and tries to blend in with the audience. He always manages to get kicked out at some point when he barks up the wrong tree, but it all leads to great, insightful footage. Check out his newest adventure at the Christians United for Israel's annual Washington-Israel Summit.

The reason I mention VICE and Max Blumenthal in the same post is that they both manage to go places and meet people and do things that I always wanted to know more about, but will never have the chance to experience myself. So this is a thank you to both VICE and Max.

We don't have cable yet at my new apartment, but we do get about 20 random channels. Somehow, we are fortunate enough to be able to get Food Network. My favorite show is definitely "Good Eats" with my main man Alton Brown.

It's described on his website as " Pop culture, comedy, and plain good eating: Host Alton Brown explores the origins of ingredients, decodes culinary customs and presents food and equipment trends. Punctuated by unusual interludes, simple preparations and unconventional discussions, he'll bring you food in its finest and funniest form."

In my newly found world of bachelorhood, one of my biggest initiatives is going to be to learn how to cook. I can make a lot of really basic stuff now, but even that basic stuff isn't that good. Watching this show is definitely a good starting point for me to become a master chef.

I am heading down to my old stomping grounds in Orlando tomorrow to visit some friends and "family"... coincidentally The Battles are playing at Studio B on Friday night. George Wright, Director of Marketing at Blendtec, is my hero. He was tasked with having to generate public excitement about a home blender on a $50 budget... and he sure as hell did.

If you have been hiding under a rock for the last few months then you are excused, but otherwise it's hard to have missed seeing at least 1 of the many different "Will it blend?" videos. In the now infamous clips, CEO Tom Dickson is rocking a white lab coat while asking the audience whether a random household object will blend in 1 of their blenders. These items range from glow sticks to hockey pucks to golf balls to marbles.

But last week, after being challenged by viewers, Dickson took it to the next step... he took out a shiny new iPhone and asked "Will it blend?" Watch the video for the answer.

Needless to say, the remains are being sold on eBay. Last I checked the high bid was $1126 on 52 bids.

Yea, still kind of excited for The Simpsons Movie. My only fear is that it's going to suck, which is definitely a possibility. The previews are funny enough, but I can't gauge a movie based on that anymore. My only argument against this movie sucking is that Matt Groening would not ruin his legacy by selling out and making a movie... or will he? Thinking back of the worst TV-to-movie adaptations, they would have to be "Dukes of Hazzard" and "Miami Vice." I haven't seen the "Reno 911" movie, but I heard it was hysterical.

My rooftop on the 4th

I know it's a little delayed, but it was hard tracking down the people that were taking pics that night. A bunch of different apartments hosted a huge rooftop party for the 4th in the 'Burg. We were up there grilling from 2PM on into the night and resident DJ Code-D (my roommate) was providing musical enjoyment for the 100's of people up there. On and off rain all day long didn't keep everyone from partying on into the night... and everyone that was patient enough to withstand the rain was treated to front row seats to an insanely spectacular fireworks display on the East River. These guys are great, except they are cocky as hell. I bought my PowerBook and 2 iPods there. Extremely helpful bunch, and it was also crazy convenient to my old apartment (they're on 23rd & 6th).

Today, I checked out my local Apple pros... also crazy convenient for me (they're on 6th and Berry). While a lot smaller than Tekserve (size of the store & inventory), these guys are cool as hell AND have a ping-pong table. I highly recommend these guys.

Electric Door is a cool new streetwear and culture e-mag you have to download the .pdf for. It's definitely worth it though. I like the concept of a downloadable e-mag, especially for new mags trying to get a rep, mainly because I can view it offline i.e. on the subway.

Bao Xishun is 7"9... and 56 years old. He managed to pull this hot little number, Xia Shujian, who is half his age and 3/4 his height at 5"6. He looks like some kind of crazy ass Chinese pimp in this picture with that cane. Weird stuff.

Why couldn't Bao just teach himself to play basketball 35 years ago? There is a laundry list of names of guys who played in the NBA who weren't nearly as tall as him and were terrible at basketball.

Last night @ NY Tech MeetUp

Last night I had the chance to do a 5 minute Confabb presentation at the 33rd NY Tech MeetUp. I was a little skeptical at first since we aren't exactly providing any new type of technology at Confabb, just an awesome new service. The 5 minutes seemed to last forever, especially when Scott asked I do a demo instead of my boring power point. I eventually got through it, and successfully wrapped up my first encounter with having to speak to an audience of 500 tech-savvy folks. The experience was great, and it was good exposure for Confabb.

Oh, for any NYers reading this... you have to check out this site called UpNext. They debuted last night, and it's pretty freakin' awesome.

Huge props to Freebass over at Spliffington Management for his most recent accomplishment. Free has 2 tracks on the new Fabolous album, From Nothin' To Somethin'. The album came in at No. 1 in it's first week, having sold 159,000 copies. Tonight is the 5-year anniversary of The Rub at Southpaw. If you are in Brooklyn tonight and want to dance your a$$ off at 1 of the best parties around, stop by. Then tomorrow, they will be at McCarren Park Pool spinning with Mark Ronson.

If you don't know about The Rub, they are a NY-based DJ crew consisting of DJ Ayres, Eleven and Cosmo Baker. Individually and collectively they have put out some very memorable mixes that are definitely worth checking out.
