I saw Sicko last night... and guess who showed up?
That guy in the red hat... that's Michael Moore.
Funny thing is, right before we walked in, DD said, "Wouldn't it be cool if Michael Moore showed up tonight?" We walked into Lincoln Square Theater and heard a huge raucous upstairs, and we both looked at each other thinking the same thing... the man is in the house. It was a mob scene, with everyone trying to get a glimpse of the film-maker. This picture was as close as I could get.
DD and I got seats on the mezzanine level, so we didn't know why the theater audience downstairs starting cheering and clapping about 2 minutes before show time. Wouldn't you know it, Moore came back. Apparently he sat in on the previous showing because, "I [Moore] have lived in this neighborhood for 12 years, and this is my theater. I always come here to watch movies and I thought it would be cool to sit in the back row and watch my own movie." He addressed the audience and thanked everyone for coming.
He also said that he hoped everyone would enjoy the film and hopefully go out and do something about the injustices we were about to witness in his film...
I am not sure what to say about Sicko. On one hand, I want to say it's one of the best films I have ever seen (not an exaggeration). On the other hand, it was the most sobering and depressing film I have ever seen (also, not an exaggeration). I cried, and I am assuming everyone else in attendance did to... or wanted to, at least. Also, halfway through the movie I had an epiphany... I want to move to London. It was obviously just impulse at the time, but after seeing this movie maybe you can see what my intentions are behind that bold statement.

"Sicko" Trailer
Michael Moore isn't coming today due to severe weather conditions in the Northeast. Supposedly they will be debuting "Sicko" tonight here in DC to a sold out house. I don't know if this was just a bad joke or if it's actually true... especially since just yesterday I said the film is debuting in NY. Either way, the trailer is amazing.

Attention Moore-heads!
Great news for anyone wanting to check out Michael Moore's new flick even earlier. The only fortunate souls who get to catch an early glimpse are NYers. "Sicko" will be playing on Friday at a single screen at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square theater... lines should be ridiculous. The originally planned opening is 6/31 in almost 250 theaters around the country, but Lionsgate is playing some "sneak previews" in markets where big Mike has historically done well (San Fran, LA, Boston, Philly). Already there are some mixed reviews, but I don't care... this movie should be sick (get it? Ah, nevermind).

I am having THIS much fun!
This conference has been amazing so far... and we are only halfway through!
Last night I got to see Sen. Bernie Sanders (VT), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (MN), and Sen. Sherrod Brown (OH) talk about "The New Populist Energy." The session was mediated by Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation.
Today I sat front row for speeches by 4 Democratic Presidential hopefuls: Sen. Mike Gravel (AK), Gov. Bill Richardson (NM), Sen. Barack Obama (IL), and Sen. John Edwards (NC). Here is my analysis of these candidates: Gravel-so passionate, but nobody takes him seriously. Richardson-some great ideas, great speaker, but better off as a running mate. Obama-what can I say, he's a rockstar and hopefully our next President. Edwards-smooth, like his style, but is missing something... can't put my finger on it. Here is video of the first 2 speeches: Gravel and Richardson. Obama and Edwards should be up shortly.
Tomorrow is going to be a good one, too. Sen. Hillary Clinton (NY) and Rep. Dennis Kucinich (OH) will be speaking in the morning, followed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Festivities continue with Michael Moore (who will be talking about his new documentary, Sicko), an abundance of relevant and interesting sessions, and a closing rally by Howard Dean and Jesse Jackson.
